Improvements at Sutton Cemetery

Posted onPosted on 18th Apr

Further improvements are being carried out at Sutton Cemetery by Ashfield District Council.

This includes a deep clean in April and the replanting of flower beds.

The council’s Community Safety Team is also been working closely with police to tackle anti-social and criminal behaviour at the cemetery. After a council employee saw a drug deal taking place at the cemetery, which resulted in police making arrests, the council is installing two CCTV cameras.

Bins are being replaced and there are plans to resurface paths and install higher kerbs to prevent people driving over grass.

Dog walkers leaving dog mess at the cemetery are also to be discussed by the council.

Paul Parkinson, executive director of operations, said: “The council has been working with families who have loved ones buried at Sutton Cemetery. We have acted on their concerns and we will continue to work closely with them.

“We have plans for future improvements to ensure that the cemetery, and graves, are respected and maintained to an exceptional level.

“We want Sutton Cemetery to return to being a place of rest that the families can be proud of.

“We are determined to crack down on any instances of anti-social or criminal behaviour taking place there so that the cemetery can provide a place of peaceful reflection without being spoilt by a minority of people with no respect.”
