Students’ fundraising creates buzz on campus

Posted onPosted on 4th Apr

Ashfield students are developing their social and organisational skills, while improving the lives of people across the UK.

BTEC Work Skills learners at Ashfield Post 16 Centre — the further education extension of Ashfield School, Kirkby — have decided to raise money for Children in Need.

They will be planning and running multiple events, and for the first surveyed every post 16 student, contacted local supermarkets to see if they would donate products, and took charge of the event’s marketing.

Tesco Mansfield and Morrisons Mansfield supplied hotdogs and donuts, which gave the event its name — Dough Dogs.

Asda Sutton community champion Hayley Carrington took hot dogs and condiments as well as Children in Need merchandise, such as T-shirts, banners, badges, and Pudsey ears.

Hayley said she was impressed with the students’ attitudes and enthusiasm.”

Post-16 students were also visited by the charity’s mascot, Pudsey Bear.

Students, supported in school by Work Skills teachers, raised £501.

One of the teachers, Ross Martin, said: “These students have done an incredible job. They have shown outstanding teamworking skills, communication skills, customer service skills, and general all-round employability skills.

“Each one has brought something to the table. I know they have enjoyed it and feel proud that they had the confidence to pull it off in front of 600 students and staff.”

Linda Maguire, head of Ashfield Post-16, added: “There was a real buzz across campus. This has to be one of our most successful fundraisers ever.

“It’s always a wonderful sight to see students going above and beyond, especially for a cause that will help so many others.”

Student Asen Alekov said: “You have to be bold and encourage people to buy. It’s for charity!”
