Golfers in Hampshire have raised £2,700 for a brain tumour charity — as a thank you from the family of a determined 97-year-old Mansfield woman.

Dorothy Tiplady had an acoustic neuroma (benign brain tumour)removed in 1998.

The relatively rare tumour grows in the inner ear, affecting hearing, balance and facial function — and Dorothy underwent intracranial surgery to have it removed.

The tumour was attached to her facial nerves, behind her ear, and caused her face to drop on one side. Dorothy also continues to have problems with hearing and tear ducts.

However, the help she has received from BANA (British Acoustic Neuroma Association) prompted her son, Mark Tiplady, who now lives in Hampshire, to give something back to the charity that was formed in Mansfield.

“Mum has received great support from BANA, through its local meetings and support groups,” he said.

“But it is a small charity, with tight budgets, so when I was made captain of my local golf club I decided to include the charity in our fundraising for the year.”

The Tiplady family raised hundreds of pounds for BANA seven years ago when Dorothy decided to mark her 90th birthday by asking people to make donations to the charity instead of buying her presents at a special party.

The event at Blidworth Miners’ Welfare brought together more than 70 family and friends, including Mark and his sister, Pauline.

Mark was captain of Alresford Golf Club in 2021 and, because of the pandemic, that carried on into 2022.

He included BANA as one of the causes supported by the Captains’ Charity 2022, which raised a total of £15,700.

As well as the £2,700 given to BANA, £9,000 went to Alice’s Arc, which is dedicated to finding a cure and kinder, more targeted treatments for those affected by childhood cancer rhabdomyosarcoma; and £4,000 to Parkinsons UK.
