Food charity opens free meal project

Posted onPosted on 10th Mar

FoodCycle, a national charity that aims to make food poverty, loneliness, and food waste a thing of the past, is appealing for volunteers as it opens the doors to its first community project in Nottinghamshire.

The Magdalene Centre on Church Avenue, Sutton, will host a weekly free meal and conversation every Wednesday from 29th March, at 6pm, for anyone who wants to go along.

Serving up community meals using food that would otherwise have gone to waste, FoodCycle relies on volunteers to provide nutritious food and conversation.

East Midlands regional manager Martha Skinner said: “We are thrilled to be opening our first project in the East Midlands, introducing FoodCycle to the Sutton community.

“As the cost-of-living crisis continues to hit people hard across the country and we greet spring with news of increased energy bills and supermarket food supply issues, our service is more vital than ever.

“We look forward to providing a warm space, friendly chat, and a nutritious, three-course meal to anyone who needs it.”

FoodCycle’s free community meals are open to all, and guests range from low-income families, people affected by homelessness, and those who cannot afford to buy food. No questions are asked, you can just turn up and take a seat.

FoodCycle Sutton is looking to recruit volunteers and project leaders. Flexible volunteer roles without a minimum time commitment include cooking, hosting, and running projects.
