Tackling marathon for kidney charity

Posted onPosted on 10th Mar

Mansfield woman Rachel Bishop is continuing to raise money in memory of her courageous sister-in-law.

Rachel, who completed a tandem sky dive in 2021, will run the Manchester Marathon later this month.

The specialist public health practitioner is again raising funds for National Kidney Federation (NKF).

The charity meant a lot to her beloved sister-in-law, Sarah Moody, who died in November 2020 after having two kidney transplants that enabled her to ‘lead a fantastic life’.

“I signed up for this experience as I like to challenge myself at times and what better way than to do a marathon,” said Rachel.

“I love running. I may not be the fastest of runners, but I enjoy it all the same. I’ve completed a few half-marathons before and never thought I would do a full one. What greater way to do it than complete it for charity.

NKF meant a lot to Sarah. This charity not only supports kidney patients, but families as well.

“Sarah was a kidney patient herself. Her first transplant was at 18 and the second when she was 27.

“They meant everything to her and were so precious to allow her to lead a fantastic life.

“She would fundraise for charities all the time, even when she was poorly. She would always think about other people and their needs.”

Sarah won medals for Great Britain in the World Transplant Games, playing badminton, volleyball, and basketball.

Rachel added: “Sarah travelled across the world to compete for Great Britain and I had the amazing opportunity to watch her in Malaga in 2017 as well at various places across the UK.

“She amazed me with her courage and fight for life, and I will never forget her. She has left a massive hole in the world. She was one of my best friends and the best sister-in-law anyone could ever wish for.”

Looking ahead to the marathon, the second largest in the UK, she added: “I’m feeling nervous, but I will be there on the day to take part. It will be a week before my 46th birthday.

“I will complete the challenge I’ve set myself and enjoy every minute of it.”
