Cleaning up Green space

Posted onPosted on 10th Mar

A green space blighted by littering, fly tipping, fire, and reckless behaviour in Boughton has been cleaned up by Newark and Sherwood District Council.

Officers on an estate walkabout identified a huge amount of litter, including drinks cans and bottles, illegally dumped around the green space. There was also evidence of fire damage with items of furniture being set alight.

Housing and Waste Management officers collected 12 bags of waste and litter.

Coun Roger Jackson, portfolio holder for Cleaner, Safer, Greener, said: “We are committed to creating a cleaner, safer, greener district, and I know many of our residents work hard to do the same.

“It was only in October that our Street Scene team removed seven tonnes of detritus from around the estate and installed six new litter bins as part of our Boughton Day of Action.

“It is so unfortunate that there are a mindless few who continue to harm our district in this way and spoil the hard work of other members of their community and the district council.”

Coun Jackson added: “I encourage everyone to be our eyes and ears in reporting suspicious activity and helping identify perpetrators who are selfishly spoiling our local environment.

“Please report anti-social behaviour and fly-tipping to us so that we can investigate and ensure perpetrators are issued with the rightly deserved punishment.”

If you witness someone fly tipping, leave the evidence where it is and report it at www.newark-sherwooddc.gov.uk/fly-tipping or call 01636 650000 as soon as possible.

Fly-tipping is a crime under the Environmental Protection Act which carries a possible unlimited fine. If your waste is dumped illegally, you could be fined and/or receive a prison sentence.
