Take the ‘Write Track’ and see your play on the stage

Posted onPosted on 12th Jan

As part of the ongoing programme of new writing at Mansfield Palace Theatre, there is the opportunity for a maximum of four playwrights (aged 16-25) based in the East Midlands to put forward a short stage play idea or a completed play for consideration to be staged in the town.

There is no commission fee or royalties offered for the production.  Any Box Office income gained will be used to offset the production costs.

The project is in partnership with Vision West Nottinghamshire College’s Performing Arts Department.  Following successful similar projects, with a professionally-led production team working with current performing arts students (who will be auditioned and form the acting team), this project will culminate in rehearsals and two performances in April 2023.

The selected playwrights will be working with actors (mainly aged 16-19) but this does not mean a play should be restricted to only having characters of a similar age. Students have to take up the challenge of playing several characters of different ages as part of their training.

The wide theme for the plays, which can be interpreted and responded to in any way the playwrights seem appropriate, is identity.

The chosen playwrights will have the opportunity to work with director Christopher Neil, Stacey Moon-Tracy (dramaturgical support), a maximum of four actors, and the Technical Teams at Create Theatre and the Palace Theatre.

Christopher, learning and aspiration manager for Mansfield District Council’s Cultural Services, said: “This is a great opportunity for young, aspiring playwrights to see their work developed from script into performance.  They have the chance to work with a professional director and dramaturg in developing their work as well as the performing arts acting students at West Notts College.  To all keen writers for the stage, I cannot encourage them enough to give this well supported and creative programme a go.”

If you’d like to submit your idea, send a play idea along with the first 10 pages, or a completed script of no more than 15-20 minutes in length. (This play should not have been produced before).

While the play may contain any number of characters, the remit will be to write a play with a minimum of two actors and a maximum of four involved. The play will be performed at the Create Theatre, West Notts College, Mansfield on Wednesday 19 and Thursday 20, April 2023.

The deadline for submission for ideas is Monday, 23 January 2023 and the chosen play will be announced on Monday, 30 January 2023.

Send submissions of ideas / plays to Christopher Neil, learning and aspiration manager, Mansfield Palace Theatre, Leeming Street, Mansfield NG18 1NG or email: [email protected] / call 01623 412921 with any questions.
