Schools win funding for major refurbishment

Three schools — Meden School, Warsop; The Garibaldi School, Forest Town; and All Saints’ Catholic Academy, Mansfield — are among 239 nationwide that will be rebuilt or substantially refurbished as part of a fourth round of the Government’s School Rebuilding Programme.

It aims to provide funding to transform 500 schools across England.

Mansfield MP and Nottinghamshire County Council leader Ben Bradley said: “Everyone knows education is my top passion and I’m determined to give kids from our neck of the woods the opportunity to succeed in life, no matter their background.

“I’ve constantly pushed for an improvement to our local education offering, and this announcement shows this work is paying off.

“I can’t express how fantastic this news is for students at Meden School, The Garibaldi School, and All Saints’ Catholic Academy.

“I’m over the moon that Government is doing everything possible to give every young person the opportunity to succeed, progress, and fulfil their potential.

“I’ve visited each of these schools, and each time I’ve been the number one issue that staff have raised has been the quality of their buildings, and that some of their school estate is not fit for purpose or is at the end of its life.

“This investment, once completed, will mean that students get a better education in modern, fit-for-purpose settings, and will prove that we’re committed to investing in them and their future.”

The School Rebuilding Programme is backed by £1.8billion of government funding this financial year, helping to rebuild and refurbish primary, secondary, and specialist schools, in addition to sixth form colleges around England.

The funding for these Mansfield schools will help to deliver state-of-the-art learning environments for pupils, such as new classrooms, science labs, sports halls, and dining halls. The majority of the projects are set to be completed in three to five years.

Each school in the programme has been selected based on the condition of its buildings, making sure the greatest improvements are delivered for schools that need them the most and maximising children’s chances to gain the skills and knowledge they need.

The new buildings will be more energy efficient for future winter resilience, helping schools keep bills down and meeting our Net Zero commitments.

The School Rebuilding Programme will create opportunities, jobs, and apprenticeships. From the construction industry to suppliers, businesses will be offering training as part of their involvement.

Other schools that have previously been confirmed as among the projects to benefit from the funding are Yeoman Park Academy, Mansfield Woodhouse; Ashfield Comprehensive School, Kirkby; and Kirkby College.
