Free orienteering course launched in Warsop

Posted onPosted on 20th Oct

A free orienteering course has been launched at Carrs Lane Park, Warsop, thanks to Mansfield District Leisure Trust (MDLT).

MDLT, the former operator of Oak Tree Leisure Centre, Rebecca Adlington Swimming Centre and Water Meadows Fitness and Swimming Complex in Mansfield, before handing over control of those facilities to More Leisure in May, had a pot of money remaining it wanted to use to benefit local people.

Former chair of MDLT Geoff Waller, pictured centre with pupils from Church Vale Primary School, Church Warsop, said: “Warsop lost its leisure centre in 2018, and is an area in need of more activity options for local families, so we were keen to focus on the town.

“We chose the sport of orienteering as we felt by having something permanent in the town, it would both create a legacy for the former trust and provide a fun, active entertainment option for all age groups in Warsop for years to come.”

The course is just under 3.5km in total length and contains 19 different points on a map visitors need to find. To download the map go to www.goorienteering.org.uk/course/the-carrs–carr-lane-park. It is also available in a physical form from Vibrant Warsop on Wood Street.

The Nottinghamshire Orienteering Club are currently working towards rolling out an electronic version of the course, which will allow users to track progress on their phones.

Orienteering is an outdoor sport, which involves navigating between different points marked on a map in the fastest time possible. For more information about the sport, please contact Nottinghamshire Orienteering Club (NOC) – http://www.noc-uk.org/Home/Index
