Giant vegetables win prizes

Posted onPosted on 22nd Sep

Two growers claimed giant titles with their massive vegetables at an annual horticultural show.

It was a double success for record-breaking Joe Atherton, of Mansfield Woodhouse, who also won an award at last year’s Harrogate Autumn Flower Show at Newby Hall.

He took the class for the heaviest beetroot with his 19.63kg specimen — beating his winning beetroot from 12 months earlier, which weighed in at 16.8kg.

Joe has won many awards for his giant produce, breaking 16 world records and currently holding eight.

The show incorporates the National Onion Championships, and John Handrahan-Cook, of Meden Vale, won the heaviest onion award with his 7.434kg vegetable.

Show director Nick Smith said: “Last year we held the autumn show at Newby Hall for the first time. We were delighted that it was such a huge success.

“This autumn, with so many fantastic exhibitors and an enticing programme of events lined up, we were incredibly excited to welcome our visitors and exhibitors back for a bigger, brighter, and better autumn show.”
