Samworth speech night celebration

There were 151 nominations and more than 60 prizes given to students at Samworth Church Academy’s Speech Night.

Each of the schools within the Mansfield academy nominated a student of the year with year 12’s Joshua Lewis named All of Academy Student of the Year.
He also won the Sherwood School Student of the Year title.

He said: “I didn’t expect to win the prizes. It’s a good thing to put on my CV.”

Guest speaker was Katrina Atherton, director of A-Star Media and district councillor.

She said: “The students at Samworth are brilliant and so inspirational. It was great to see just how many of them have achieved so much because it’s hard to juggle school life.

“I wanted students to recognise that by pushing themselves now they are laying down the foundations for years to come, and on that they can build their success. I’ve been in business for seven years and it’s always been hard, you’re always learning something new and always pushing for the next thing.”

Academy student Natasha Bialecki won the award for showing an outstanding contribution to the community.

She said: “I didn’t expect to win this award and feel honoured to get it. I enjoy doing the work anyway, so this is a great bonus. My family are proud of me.”

The audience were entertained by The Samworth Church Academy Dancers performing Smoking Gun and the evening was presented by principal Mr Barry Found.

He said: “The Speech Night was the first since I arrived as principal. The evening totally reflected the high quality of our students.

“The spectacular event was only matched by the spectacular achievements of those students nominated and awarded.

“I am proud to be the principal of The Samworth Church Academy. We have a great many talented and inspirational students and it was wonderful to see their achievements recognised at such a wonderful event.”
