Fundraiser to scale new heights on Everest trek

Posted onPosted on 13th Jul

Generous Mansfield businessman Malcolm Hall is training for another gruelling fundraising challenge.

Malcolm, known for his community initiatives and award-winning business Hall-Fast Industrial Supplies, aims to complete an expedition to Everest Base Camp in Nepal.

He will raise money for two causes during the 19-day trek — The Frank Bruno Foundation, inspired by the famous boxer, and the recently-opened Switch Up Community Hub in Ravensdale, Mansfield

Malcolm said: “When asked I jumped at the chance to join the expedition to Everest Base Camp. It has always been on my list of things to do, and raising money and awareness for fantastic causes that are close to my heart is an added bonus.”

Setting off on 14th October, he will be part of a small team, led by experienced explorer Mark Wood. They will trek through sherpa country and head up to Everest Base Camp, situated on the Khumbu Glacier.

There will also be a chance to climb Kala Pattar, which at 5,545m high (18,192ft) has the ultimate view of Mount Everest.

The total trip will take 19 days and due to the high altitude a lot of training will be undertaken.

Previously Malcolm, who has a strong desire to ‘put something back’, has cycled 310 miles from Newcastle to London in 24 hours, completed a Tough Guy challenge, and ridden on a coast-to-coast charity ride for charities.

Explaining why he has chosen to raise money and awareness for the Switch Up Community Hub, which was featured in last month’s News Journal, Malcolm said: “Ravensdale has many issues around employment, crime, health, and education.”

Switch Up, a charity led by the inspirational Marcellus Baz, tackles youth crime, violence, addiction, and gang culture through sport and physical activity.

Malcolm added: “I based my business in Mansfield 15 years ago and like others I have done my bit to raise the aspirations, confidence, and self-belief in youngsters.

“It has been an uphill challenge at times. Some people in the area talk down Mansfield and also talk down areas like Ravensdale, which naturally has a negative impact — and it makes it easier for people outside the area to do the same.

“We all know in some areas of Mansfield there are generations of worklessness, but we must remember that this is not a young person’s fault. We need to help them break the cycle. We need to help to guide them, show them that there is a different way, instil belief in them, and show them a different path.

“Sport can help us achieve that. Over many years I have seen first-hand the impact that initiatives with community-based rugby clubs have had in enhancing and changing the direction of young people’s lives

“In the Mansfield and Ashfield area there are 10 boxing gyms with many volunteers coaching youngsters on a daily basis, helping them to develop boxing skills and giving them confidence, a purpose, and instilling respect for themselves and others.

“I have seen first-hand the difference in youngsters’ attitudes in the local gym where I coach.

“The work being undertaken by all of these should be applauded and supported.”

He is also raising money and awareness for the Frank Bruno Foundation, a charity that provides support, encouragement, and motivation to succeed for those facing mental ill-health.

Malcolm explained: “Frank’s ill health has been widely publicised. I have struggled with it over the years, as I am sure many of you have — afterall, I do not know anyone who has not, to some degree, struggled with mental ill-health or depression and some point.

“Some people, however, live with it daily and need help.
