Meden Sports Centre in Warsop will reopen in time for the new school term in January after essential repairs were carried out to address fire safety concerns.

The sports hall, multi-purpose room and the fitness gym will all reopen on Monday 5 January followed by the swimming pool on Wednesday, 7th January.

Work to install new windows in the gym and new showers will continue until 12 January at the latest. Mansfield District Council and Mansfield District Leisure Trust, which manages the facilities on behalf of the council, apologise for any inconvenience that customers may experience as a result.

Mansfield District Council and Nottinghamshire County Council took the joint decision to close the sports centre with immediate effect at the end of August.

Work started immediately which allowed the sports hall and multi-purpose room to re-open in September for both school and community use. A temporary gym was set up in the Meden School and was open to the community in the evenings and on Saturday mornings.

Contractor Robert Woodhead Ltd, of Edwinstowe, started work in October on the second phase of work, which included improvements such as new ceilings, showers, carpets and the redecoration of reception areas and changing rooms.

During the closure, Meden membership payments were frozen and members could use Mansfield District Leisure Trust’s four other leisure centres.

Cllr Philip Shields, Portfolio Holder for the Environment at Mansfield District Council, said: “We appreciate how important this facility is to the residents of Warsop and the surrounding area and are pleased that the centre will reopen as planned for the new school term. We are very sorry for the inconvenience caused by the closure but the safety of customers and staff is always our top priority. We thank customers for their patience. ”

Brian Taylor, Chairman of Mansfield District Leisure Trust, said: “Having worked hard with Meden School during the works, we managed to find temporary facilities and also accommodate local residents and members at our other centres in the District during this time, but are pleased the centre can reopen in January.”
