MP visits school’s new reading areas

Revamped classrooms and new reading areas for children at The Green Infant School, South Normanton, have been praised by Bolsover MP Mark Fletcher.

During his visit pupils showed the MP various areas in the school that are dedicated to promoting children’s love of reading.

“The children were incredibly well behaved. It is a lovely and vibrant school,” he said.

“It was lovely to visit their new reading areas and to see how important reading is to the culture of the school.

“We know that reading is so important to pupils’ development and after listening to the children talking about their World Book Day event — and hearing about Pyjama Day at the school — it is clearly a very important part of their school ethos.”

Senior teacher Claire Newton added: “Reading is a particular focus for us at The Green. We celebrated World Book Day by having author Bemma Akyeampong join us for the day. She led English and art workshops about her book, Ayuda’s Messy Rescue, and children were engaged and enjoyed their experience.

“We have worked hard on promoting reading in our school and have created a new library and reading areas in all classes. We were delighted when Mark asked if he could visit.

“The children enjoyed showing him all of our new reading areas and the other exciting projects in school, such as our new hall and revamped outdoor area for Foundation.”

Mark added: “Education is the most important thing in my constituency. It is the thing that will make the biggest difference to the community and help Bolsover to improve over time.”
