Community hub plan for Ravensdale

Posted onPosted on 23rd Feb

A leisure centre in Mansfield is to become a community hub that aims to steer young people away from crime and anti-social behaviour.

Nottingham-based Switch Up will take over the day-to-day operation of Mansfield District Council’s River Maun Recreation Centre, on Barringer Road, from 1st April on a lease of at least 15-years. Switch Up supports young people to reach their potential through mentoring, education, counselling and physical activity.

The hub, which aims to provide a safe and alternative space for people to learn and develop, will be closed for a couple of weeks while Switch Up makes changes, including the creation of a boxing gym.

Coun Andy Burgin, portfolio holder for leisure and environment, said: “Switch Up is a brilliant initiative that will not only support young people to improve their physical and mental health, but also provides education, training and employment opportunities.”

Marcellus Baz, Switch Up founder and chief executive, added: “We are delighted to be establishing a permanent base in Mansfield after having supported the local community for several years. The community can expect us to connect with them so we can meet their needs.”

The council said the changes would allow the community to play a part in shaping future service provision and in the regeneration of the area. There will also be opportunities to reduce health inequalities by providing a more targeted approach to supporting people in leading active and healthy lives.
