Online safety message to youngsters

Posted onPosted on 16th Feb

Children at the Flying High Academy, Mansfield, learned about being safe online from Operation Reacher police officers.

Operation Reacher is a proactive arm of Nottinghamshire Police that has had community success since its formation in 2018.

During their visit to the primary school, officers helped pupils to recognise potential risks online and how to protect themselves.

Will Burke, e-safety and computing lead at the school, said children engaged well with police advice and enjoyed meeting the officers and looking around their police vehicles.

“It was incredible to see Nottinghamshire Police taking such a keen interest in children’s online safety,” he added.

“As the world becomes more connected and children are exposed to this at a younger age, it is key we arm them with the skills needed to keep them safe.

“Hearing it from the police has helped to emphasise the importance of this to our pupils. We know our children have taken their message on board and want to thank our visitors for their time helping us all to be safer online.”

Pupil Layla Holliday (9) said the visit was helpful and enjoyable.

“I learned that it is not OK to give away personal information or talk to strangers,” she added.

“I also learned that I should tell an adult if anyone is being mean to me online and I shouldn’t meet strangers. I enjoyed running around to answer the questions. It was fun and educational.”
