Mum and son’s tandem skydive plan to help school

Posted onPosted on 9th Aug

“I’ve done a tandem jump before for charity (albeit 20 years ago) and it was exhilarating, so when Jack said he wanted to do it I, of course, jumped up in excitement as I’ve wanted to do it again ever since. Plus I would be an awful mum if I didn’t jump with him in a show of solidarity!”

Dawn House is a day and residential specialist school for pupils aged between 5 and 19 who have severe and complex speech, language and communication difficulties with associated learning and/or behavioural difficulties.

It integrates education and in-house therapy for all pupils in a highly-specialist environment so that each of their pupils emerge as self-confident, independent individuals, able to manage their own learning and behaviour and equipped with the competencies, skills and strategies to take the next steps into further or higher education and the world of work.

However, the school does not receive government funding for the upkeep of its buildings. It relies upon charitable donations, the Friends of Dawn House’s fundraising efforts throughout the year, and funding applications to help with the building repairs – and also to buy new equipment for the students.

As the building dates to the 1970s it is in increasing need of maintenance, including a new front door for the Chimes building and larger equipment for a new Junior area. This past year the charity has had to put funds towards the repairs of two parts of the leaky school roof and repairs to the school pool.
