Celebrating 40 years of service at the same school

Posted onPosted on 1st Jun

A Mansfield school celebrated a member of staff who has worked there for 40 years at a presentation assembly.

Linda King started as a cleaner in 1981, soon became a midday supervisor and is now senior midday supervisor at Flying High Academy, Mansfield.

Linda says she had no idea when she started that she would still be working at the same place 40 years on.

“I knew I would always work in a school as I love working with children,” she explained.

“But it never occurred to me I would still be here 40 years later! Things are very different now, much safer with far higher standards within school — it’s far better now.”

Linda says she is constantly recognised by former pupils.

“I quite often meet former pupils who are now parents with children of their own, even with children attending this school,” she added.

“Or I can be walking through town and hear someone shouting Mrs King! I wasn’t expecting the school to do the presentation assembly, in fact I didn’t realise I’d been here that long.

“It took me by surprise. It was lovely and much appreciated.”

Nicola Lingard, clerical officer and midday lead, working alongside Linda, said: “I have worked with Linda for 18 years and she is the best boss anyone could wish for.

“She always understands people and if you have a problem at work or at home, she will be there for you. She is one in a million and we all love her.”

Jane Adams, office administrator and attendance officer, added: “Linda is a much-loved member of the Flying High Academy team and everyone in the school office sees Linda as a surrogate mum!

“She is always smiling and is a real asset to the school. All of the staff and the children, past and present, are grateful for the service she has provided, and we hope she will stay with us for the next 40 years.”
