Garden of hope inspired by the work of pupils

The idea for a new Garden of Hope at St Mary Magdalene Church of England Primary School, Sutton, came from the efforts of youngsters.

Headteacher Sam Robinson said: “This is a garden that represents hope and stemmed from our recovery curriculum at St Mary Magdalene’s.

“The idea originated from pupils’ work based on The Red Tree, a book by Shaun Tan.

“We also looked at artist Andy Goldsworthy and tried to recreate some of his Nature-based art as we believe that the natural world supports mental health and wellbeing.

“The garden not only provides a pleasant space for children, but also a sensory experience with the herbs and flowers we will grow, complimented by the different textures including stone artworks and natural arches.”

Pupil Sophia Ellis, aged 9, said: “Soon we will be getting a fountain, which will come out of the rocks.

“We have also got an arch and plants in a big planter. I like the plants because not only do they look nice, but they all have nice scents too.”

Sam Robinson said the children’s ideas only became reality thanks to the hard work of the school’s site manager, Steve Ward.

“The garden looks fantastic,” added Sam. “It will continue to grow and change through the seasons. The whole school wants to thank Steve for turning our designs and dreams into reality.”

Steve said: “I enjoyed interpreting the plans for the Garden of Hope and look forward to seeing it looking at its best as the plants grow.

“I hope that the children attending St Mary Magdalene’s now, and into the future, enjoy using the space as much as I enjoyed building it.”
