Mansfield Building Society’s Community Support Scheme has responded to a call from Northfields Primary School, Mansfield Woodhouse, to help fund a tree planting session.

The planting was part of Sherwood Forest Hospitals’ climate action Hope Orchard Project, featured in last month’s News Journal.

The project, which identified that during the pandemic spending more time in Nature had a positive affect on the wellbeing of many people, saw trees planted at several local hospitals as well as many schools and colleges across the county to create further green spaces for people to enjoy. 

Forest School leader at Northfield Primary School Karen Smith said: “We are grateful to the Mansfield Building Society for donating £300 to our Hope Orchard Project.

“This money helped buy trees, shrubs, and compost so the children of Northfield could create a Hope Orchard on our developing Forest School site. 

“As a school we were invited by Sherwood Forest Trust to take part in the project to help us remember all those who have struggled during the pandemic and to provide hope moving forward.”

Holly Smith, of the building society, pictured presenting the cheque to the school, said: “To see the children excited and engaged in a project that means so much to the wider community was fantastic.

“As always, the Mansfield’s Community Support Scheme is thrilled to have been able to support the local community, not only in enabling the school and children to purchase the plants they needed, but also to be a part of a bigger countywide initiative to provide ‘hope’ as we ease out of lockdown restrictions.”

Mansfield Building Society’s Community Support Scheme funds groups and organisations in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire and meets twice yearly to consider applications.
