Oak Tree Primary School’s library has won a national award.

The Mansfield school’s library, opened in 2013 by Olympic gold medal-winning swimmer Rebecca Adlington, was successful at the School Library Association’s (SLA) Awards in London.

The award recognises innovation, creativity and excellence in school libraries design and use. The £500 prize from awards sponsors LFC will support future development of the library.

Oak Tree’s library was possible thanks to financial support from the Foyle Foundation and other local partners, including Vision West Nottinghamshire College, Boots UK, IKEA and the Tesco Oak Tree Lane store.

Pupils enter the library through a giant 3-D open book doorway and follow a yellow brick road to find their books, a pair of ruby slippers and the carved storyteller chair.

The library is a key part of school life, promoting reading for pleasure and giving children a wider choice of books and other reading material to borrow.

Head Mrs Sarah Moore said: “We gasped when Oak Tree Primary School was announced as the winner. The other schools all looked so brilliant. We are ecstatic that our efforts have been rewarded.

“It is testament to the hard work put in to developing the library and now running it in school. The children, parents, governors and staff obviously did a great job of impressing the judges.

“We want our children to be enthusiastic about reading and what better way could we have of inspiring them than securing a national award for their library.”
