Ashfield MP appointed Parliamentary Champion on Conservative Disability Group

Lee Anderson, MP for Ashfield and Eastwood, says he is delighted to be appointed Parliamentary Champion on the Conservative Disability Group.

The group champions disabled rights and has representatives from both the House of Commons and the House of Lords. It is an independent organisation made up of UK Conservative Party members who want to see a more inclusive society for disabled people.

It aims to create a bridge between the Conservative Party and the disability sector and the wider disability community — supporting disabled people to inform policy and promoting a better understanding of the Conservative approach to disability issues.

Lee came to the attention of the group because of his desire to help those with disabilities – both visible and hidden. His wife is disabled and has had a double lung transplant in recent years, opening his eyes to the everyday issues disabled people face.

“I was honoured to be asked to become involved with the Conservative Disability Group,” he said.

“I want to give people a stronger voice to make sure we improve society for disabled people and to give them the same life chances as everyone else. I’ve done a lot of work recently on hidden disabilities and the discrimination people too often face.

The MP was formerly co-opted as a Board member at the Group’s Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, 24 February.
