Youngster sparkles at fundraising for children’s charity

A young member of a Mansfield charity led her school’s fundraising for the cause.

Sophie Davenport, the youngest NSPCC Fundraising committee member in the UK, belongs to the Mansfield District committee. She attends all the committee meetings and events that are age appropriate.

Sophie led the charity fundraiser Get Your Sparkle On at St Peter and St Paul School, Chesterfield, to raise funds for local NSPCC charities.

Tracey Davenport, chair of the NSPCC Mansfield District Committee, said: “The committee recently approved Sophie’s idea of a 70s disco, but this is on hold due to Covid. However, we hope to run it as soon as we can.

“Sophie spends many hours helping with the behind the scenes NSPCC work, making favour boxes, wrapping raffle prizes and helping to set up events.

“From being three years-old, Sophie has been an angel at our annual Christmas Carol Concert, always taking the collection bucket round the congregation at the end.”

The school said through working closely with the NSPCC, St Peter and St Paul School’s children know that there are many youngsters living hard and painful lives, and they want to help as many of those children as they can. They have heard the NSPCC’s school service talk, and this has helped them to understand about some of their work.

Jill Phinn, headteacher, said: “The more children are aware of child abuse, the less it hides in the shadows and we can help more children who are brave enough to speak out.

“I love that Sophie wants to help other children. We are very proud of her leading this charity day within our school and raising funds to help other children.”

Get Your Sparkle On is an annual NSPCC event where friends, workmates and family can get together to raise money to protect children from abuse.
