Churches in Mansfield and Mansfield Woodhouse are staging the first Mansfield Woodhouse Apple Day at Turner Hall Orchard, Church Street, on Sunday, 5th October 1-3pm.

Residents are invited to take their own apples to be pressed at the free community event.

There will be a competition to bake the best apple pudding, a BBQ, and a chance to visit bee hives and explore the large mixed orchard.

The orchard was planted by St Edmund’s Church, Mansfield Woodhouse, in 2011.

The Rev Allan Scrivener, vicar of St Edmund’s, is bringing his apple press to help people make the most of their cache.

He said: “Supporting people through our foodbank we know how hard it can be to make ends meet, let alone celebrate the generosity of creation. There are millions of quietly growing edibles all around us in nature. The Apple Day is our way of sharing that goodness with all our neighbours and friends.”

Susie Booth, event organiser and member of St Edmund’s Church, said: “What makes an event like this is when the whole community comes together to celebrate and acknowledge the changing of the seasons and the good gifts that come with that – so easy to miss but a delight to pause and enjoy. Apple-bobbing, eating good food, and sharing ideas is what this is all about. I can’t wait!”
