Volunteer Covid responders wanted at community group

Posted onPosted on 19th Aug

An Ashfield group that has been busier than ever during the coronavirus pandemic is appealing for Covid responders to join its community voluntary work.

Ashfield Voluntary Action (AVA), a registered charity, has been serving the community for more than a decade.

The organisation provides support to individuals and families across Ashfield through targeted projects, as well as hosting community groups; from music and computer skills, to crafts and a befriending service.

It aims to help reduce isolation, develop skills, and create a real sense of community.

A spokesman said: “The pandemic has taught us many things, including how important it is to have a sense of community and staying connected.

“During the past five months, AVA has been busier than ever, supporting vulnerable and isolated people in our region.

“But our work is not finished and volunteers, particularly Covid responders, are still needed to support vulnerable people across Ashfield.”

As lockdown restrictions are eased, volunteers are still required to assist with shopping and collecting prescriptions, for example.

The spokesman added: “Can you spare one or two hours a week to help Ashfield residents during these unprecedented times?

“Whether you are an individual or a local business who would like to get involved, Ashfield residents need your support.”

One volunteer, Anna, of Huthwaite, is a Covid responder and helps Ashfield residents who are isolating or unable to leave their homes.

She spares a couple of hours a week to collect and deliver shopping.

“I began volunteering as I wanted to make a difference to people who otherwise would not have anyone to turn to during an extremely scary time,” Anna said.

“I initially shopped for four people a week, but it’s just one person now the restrictions have eased.

“It has given me a real sense of purpose during the pandemic and I have developed some unexpected friendships.

“I really recommend volunteering for Ashfield Voluntary Action to anyone, the people are wonderful — just give it a try.”

Beryl, of Sutton, who is over 80 and has been using the Covid responder service since April, added: “It is an absolute lifeline. I’m not very mobile and inclined to fall, so I have difficulty getting around.

“I don’t have any transport or family who can assist me. Not only is the weekly shopping greatly appreciated, it is very nice to see people because I haven’t had any other visitors coming to the house.”

Teresa Jackson, manager at AVA, said: “Volunteering is at the heart of everything we do. We have an amazing team of 54 active volunteers, including 17 Covid responders.
“They undertake all sorts of work in the community and make a massive difference in people’s lives.

“Our fantastic team of volunteers are all different and what they do for the community is incredibly varied.

“There really is a volunteering opportunity for everyone. The one thing they have in common is their outlook and desire to do something to help others.”
