Bringing out the best in Samworth Church Academy students

The dramatic challenges facing education has, says, Lisa McVeigh, principal of Samworth Church Academy, brought out the best in her students.

As the school’s students received their A-Level results, she said: “In an unusual year for our students we are extremely proud of them and how they have approached recent events.

“Their results were submitted to the exam boards using all the evidence at our disposal and in the fairest way possible and so reflect the hard work that they put into their courses and their mock exams before the lockdown was enforced.

“As always there are some outstanding individual achievements that are well-deserved, and we wish all our students the very best for their futures.

“Despite the challenges of the past few months, our vision for the academy remains a long-term vision and consists of an ambitious wide-ranging agenda. We will do everything we can to achieve this for all of our fantastic students in the years ahead.

Some notable outcomes at Samworth Church Academy included: Oliver Hague A*A*AB, Molly Makins A*AA, Max Titterton A*AAB, Sofia Price-Killick A*AB, Evan Gardiner AAAB, Awaad Faisal AAB, Kiah-Lily Massey AAB.

Chief executive at the Diocese Southwell & Nottingham Multi Academy Trust, Chris Moodie said: “This represents another step forward for Samworth Church Academy and, more importantly, for the students whose results we are celebrating today.”

Student, Awaad Faisal (A Maths, A in History and B in Chemistry) is now going to the University of Manchester to study medicine. A former headboy, he says that he feels he has developed skills that will help him to cope in the next stages of his education.

“I was hoping for slightly better results but actually it doesn’t matter as long as I can go to Manchester to study. I have in mind that I want to work in surgery, but I am sure as I go through all the training that I will find other parts of medicine interesting, and I will stay openminded.”

Awaad says that he will miss Samworth Church Academy. “I think moving away, leaving Samworth Church Academy, will be quite a shock because it’s been seven years of my life! The past two years I became very involved with events at the Academy and that gave me a good skillset; the teamwork and leadership skills will help me moving forward.

“Particularly as Manchester teaches in a problem-based learning format, and that will play to my strengths. I will miss the Academy but intend to come back and talk to students about my experiences one day.”

Aaron Racher achieved A* to B grades and said, “My results gave me a confirmed place at my first-choice university, The University of Leeds. At this university I will be studying Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering with the hopes of pursuing a career in this field.

“I am very grateful to Samworth Church Academy for their support and guidance over the past years. Since I joined in year 7, I have had many opportunities academically and vocationally including multiple sports teams, being a school captain and travelling to New York for a Round Square conference. The teachers and staff have been fantastic through the years and this really helped me get on the path to my future goals.”
