Caring students turn disappointment into donation to two charities

Posted onPosted on 20th May

Generous students at the Brunts Academy, Mansfield, have donated the £6,800 they raised for the adventure of a lifetime to two charities.

Their trip to Nepal in July has been cancelled because of the coronavirus crisis.

It would have given the students the opportunity to experience Nepal’s culture and they would have taken part in project work to support local communities there.

The students had held a variety of fundraising activities, including an expedition in the Peak District (above), bake sales and a spring festival towards their planned trip to help with their voluntary work in Nepal.

Now, to make sure the students’ fundraising has not gone to waste, the money has been shared between Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation and Community Action Nepal after a unanimous vote by the students.

Brunts Academy principal Michael Lucas said: “We are so proud of our students who have helped to raise the incredible amount of money of £6,800 and we are pleased to be donating £3,400 to each of these very worthy charities.

“We will, of course, look forward to starting the planning for a future expedition once it is safe to do so.

“This has been a real team effort where our students and staff have lived and breathed our values so a huge well done to all involved.”

Claire-Marie Cuthbert, chief executive of The Evolve Trust, of which the Brunts Academy is a part, added: “We are so proud of our amazing Brunts students and the ambition they have demonstrated to achieve their goal, additionally their resilience throughout this very difficult time resulting in their trip not being able to go ahead.”
