Stags sign striker Rakish Bingham

Mansfield Town signed former Wigan Athletic striker Rakish Bingham late on transfer deadline day, an hour after the sale of wingman Sam Clucas to Chesterfield was completed.

The 20-year-old, who was previously with Wigan Athletic, has been training with the Stags over the past week and watched Saturday’s League Two 2-1 home defeat to Burton Albion.

Bingham could make his debut in tomorrow night’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy clash with local rivals Notts County.

Clucas, the subject of a failed Spireites bid last week, was sold for an undisclosed fee after Chesterfield increased their offer on Monday afternoon.

When the sale was confirmed, Mansfield Town said the move would allow manager Paul Cox to a strengthen his squad.

Born in London, Bingham joined Wigan Under-18s in 2010 after impressing whilst playing college football in East London.

Held in high regard by then-Latics boss Roberto Martinez, the youngster made his reserve team debut in April 2011 and signed his first professional contract at the end of the 2011/12 season.

After being unable to break into the Latics’ first team in 2012/13, a campaign which saw Wigan win the FA Cup, Bingham spent a portion of last season on loan at Falkirk in the Scottish Championship.

After leaving Wigan this summer, the youngster spent pre-season on trial at AFC Bournemouth and travelled with the Cherries on their tour of Austria/Switzerland.

He said: “It’s a little bit nervy to be signing on transfer deadline day.

“I’m used to being at home watching it on TV. It’s the first time I’ve been involved in it, so it’s exciting.

“I’m a striker, so scoring goals is what I hope to do. That’s my plan. I’m over the moon to be signing for the Stags.”
