BBC TV sports presenter celebrates achieving women

Posted onPosted on 30th Apr

The new president of Soroptimist Mansfield and District is Julie Howe-Shilton.

She would have received the chain of office at the group’s AGM from outgoing president Sue Manchester, but the event was cancelled because of the Covid-19 crisis.

During Sue’s year in office she had many speakers sharing their professional experiences reflecting on her theme — women who have achieved in what was a man’s world — and raising funds for her charities, Acoustic Neuroma Association and Eve Appeal.

At the group’s last dinner meeting before the Government coronavirus restrictions, the guest speaker was BBC TV sports presenter Katherine Downes, who the Soroptimists said has proved that with ability and determination it is possible to rise within a male-dominated area.

Julie said her theme for 2020/2021 is valuing and respecting ourselves and others.

She will be supporting and fundraising for the Woodland Cafe at Portland College, Women’s Refuge and liver organ donation.

A spokesperson for the Soroptimists said: “A huge thank you to all those who have supported our events. We will definitely meet again and we will continue to empower women and girls, locally and nationally. Keep well and stay safe.”
