Sports Relief fundraisers at Shirebrook Academy

Posted onPosted on 24th Mar

Shirebrook students devised and delivered a week of Sports Relief activities at their school, raising more than £1,000 for charity.

Andy Gilbert, vice-principal of Shirebrook Academy, said the events, which culminated with a Sports Relief mile race, were a huge success.

The activities were organised by the school’s Junior Leadership Team (JLT), students who gave up their time to plan and run the events, which also included a cake sale, a football crossbar challenge, a cup-stacking challenge and a chance to throw wet sponges at teachers.

It cost 20p to take part in each activity, apart from the mile race, which was open only to students who raised £10 to earn their place.

Money raised will be shared between Sport Relief and JLT’s own sustainability project, which aims to lessen the impact of plastic on the environment by increasing the number of recycling bins in school and giving each student reusable water bottles.

He said: “We had a great week in school, with everyone coming together to take part in the Sports Relief events and raise money for two worthy causes.

“Huge credit should go to our JLT, who organised the events and also helped us to deliver them, which took a lot of commitment and hard work.

“Every event was a success but I think the mile run was the highlight, because we had 60 students taking part and everyone got into the spirit of it, whether they decided to take it seriously as a proper race or came along and did it in fancy dress.”
