Gift remembers founder of Amazons support group

Posted onPosted on 22nd Nov

One of the founders of the Amazons Support Group for breast cancer patients at King’s Mill Hospital, Sutton, is being remembered in a special way.

Hunters Race Night is named after Liz Hunter, one of two cancer specialist nurses who, in 1995, founded the support group, which then became a charity.

Hunters Race Night 2019 became a special occasion when Liz’s daughter, Claire Hunter, presented the Amazons with a commemorative plaque in memory of her mother.

Liz formed the group, based at King’s Mill, after breast cancer patients expressed a need for support when they had finished their treatments.

So monthly open meetings began and were held in various places until the Amazons, after becoming a charity, were able to fund The Amazon Lounge within the Breast Care Unit at King’s Mill.

It provides a relaxed, homely environment for the open meetings and is used by breast care clinicians when a less formal environment is suitable for meeting patients.

The Amazons, who thanked Claire for the gift, said they always try to continue the good work started by Liz in 1995 and having this commemorative plaque was a wonderful way to remember her.
