Bonfire Night tips for dog owners

Posted onPosted on 4th Nov

The Dog’s Trust has issued helpful tips to ensure that your four-legged friend has a stress free night.

Fireworks can frighten many animals; as a dog owner you can help make your dog more comfortable around the loud noises by following the advice of the Dog’s Trust.

The top tips provided by the Dog’s Trust are:

1. Provide a safe hiding place

At noisy times around Bonfire Night and the rest of the firework season, make sure your dog has somewhere safe in his or her favourite room, perhaps under the table.

2. Feed your dog before the fireworks start

Once the fireworks start, they may become unsettled and not want to eat during the fireworks.

3. Walk your dog before dark

During the firework season, make sure your dog is well exercised and has had a toilet break well before the fireworks begin.

4. Make sure your house and garden are secure

During the fireworks fear may make your dog try to escape. You should close all the windows and curtains, turn the lights on and play the radio or TV to help drown out the sound of fireworks.

5. Give your dog comfort if they seek your reassurance

Don’t punish your dog for cowering or reacting to the fireworks as this will intensify their fear.

6. Let your dog hide away or play as they please

It may help to keep your dog busy indoors – play games or enjoy some reward-based training to keep their mind off the noises.

The information and advice has been shared by Ashfield District Council. Cllr Jason Zadrozny, leader of the council, said: “As a dog owner myself, I know how important it is to make sure that any animals feel safe and secure. Following the tips issued by the Dog’s Trust means that you and your dog will have a happier Bonfire Night.”
