A second world war veteran has received a special honour to mark his involvement in the Normandy landings 75 years ago.

Reginald Taylor, 94, of Clipstone, who joined the Royal Navy when he was 17 and served on HMS Vigilant, was awarded the Legion D’Honneur medal by France for his role as a minesweeper during the landings.

It was presented to him at Clipstone Social Club at a special ceremony by the chairman of Newark and Sherwood District Council, Coun Rob Crowe, after the French Consulate for the East Midlands were unable to make the event.

The Edwinstowe branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL) played the French and UK national anthems and the Clipstone and Forest Town branch of the RBL also attended, as well as many family and friends.
