Exam celebration at high school

Posted onPosted on 27th Aug

Students, staff and family were celebrating at Selston High School on Thursday morning as they received this year’s GCSE results.

With the new tougher grading system, with less coursework now in place, teachers nationally have been expressing their concerns about the demands this is places on young people.

As this year’s Ofsted inspection confirmed the culture at Selston where “pupils feel safe, well cared for and supported in school” with “relationships between adults and pupils being productive” and “teachers create a positive learning environment in lessons” has led to yet more improvements in the school’s examination results.

The school is delighted that its overall points score has risen from 42.6 to 43.2 (attainment 8).
Within that score the school is particularly pleased that the percentage of students achieving the higher grades in English has risen from 62% to 65% and Mathematics has risen from 70% to 72% with overall now over 60% getting good grades in both Maths and English.

At Selston High School there were many great individual success stories with all the hard work of students and staff paying off.

As a small school it is particularly pleasing that it has seen a rise in the number of top grades this year with 30 grade 9 or equivalent being awarded.

Headteacher Paul Halcro stated that he was very pleased with the students’ results this year, which “reflected the hard work of students and staff and the outstanding support from parents over the last five years”.
