Clean up Mansfield day success

Posted onPosted on 18th Jun

There were nearly 1,000 free and discounted collections of bulky and electrical items in Mansfield as part of a month-long campaign to clean up the district.

Mansfield District Council’s Be Tidy Together campaign provided additional dedicated services to encourage residents to tidy up their homes, gardens and neighbourhoods, while making it easier and cheaper for them to get rid of the extra waste.

A total of 695 collections took place, where bulky items such as sofas and mattresses were removed for free.
There were 287 collections of white goods and televisions, the cost of which was reduced from £16 to £5 each. Approximately half the white goods collected were fridges.

Residents are encouraged to donate unwanted furniture to charities such as the British Heart Foundation and The Furniture Project, which offer free collections of items in a reusable condition.

Be Tidy Together ended with around 30 community groups, businesses, schools and individuals taking part in the seventh annual International Clean Up Mansfield Day.

Among those who joined councillors and council officers were schools, conservation groups, businesses and individuals who collected bags of litter. Residents in the city of Mansfield in Texas, USA, also took part in a community clean-up.

Coun Andy Burgin, portfolio holder for environment, said: “It was fantastic to see so many people showing pride in their local community by taking advantage of our extra collections and joining us to help tidy up Mansfield. Thank you to everyone involved and the staff who made it happen.

“This campaign made a big difference to the district and our residents. We hope it will kick-start efforts to keep Mansfield tidier all year round.

“It is also part of our wider strategy to improve the local environment and attract more people to want to live and work here.
“Clean Up Day is a great way of encouraging groups of people to come together for the benefit of their entire community and we are pleased so many people took part.”
