Residents and businesses are invited to help spruce up the district for the seventh International Clean Up Mansfield Day.

Mansfield District Council is holding Be Tidy Together – a four-week programme of activity – as part of its commitment to build community pride and help make Mansfield district a place where people are proud to live and work.

The council is kick-starting the campaign with free extra household waste and bulky item collections in the run up to Clean Up Day on Friday, 7th June.

For one week only – from Monday, 13th May to Friday, 17th May – residents can put out up to three sturdy, tied bags of household waste on their normal green bin day. No bulky waste, builders’ rubble, garden waste or electrical items will be collected. Bags will be collected at a different time to when bins are emptied.

Between 20th May and 7th June, there will be limited free bookable bulky waste collections. These normally cost £20.50 for the first three items. Collections must be booked by calling 01623 463463. A maximum of three items such as sofa, dining table, and mattress, can be booked per household. Size limits apply and no hazardous waste such as paint, rubble, tyres, asbestos or gas bottles can be collected. There will be a £5 charge (normally £16 each) for white goods, TVs, microwaves and computer monitors due to the way these need to be disposed of.

Anyone who breaks the rules of the bulky item and extra household waste collections risks prosecution for flytipping.

From Monday 3rd to Friday, 7th June, community groups, schools and businesses are invited to take part in litter picks, painting and community clean up events for International Clean Up Mansfield Day. The first 40 groups that sign up will receive a compost bin.

Mike Robinson, strategic director at the council, said: “Be Tidy Together is more than a spring clean up – we want to increase awareness and understanding of environmental issues and the work that goes on all year round to keep the district clean and tidy.

“We get a lot of reports of litter, dog fouling and flytipping so we know these issues are important to people and we work hard to deter offenders, clean up our streets and tackle those responsible.

“We hope lots of individuals, schools, businesses and community groups will join us to make long-term improvements to their local neighbourhoods in the run up to Clean Up Day on 7th June.”

Residents are encouraged to upcycle, sell or donate to charity furniture that is in a reusable condition. The British Heart Foundation and The Furniture Project are among those that offer free collection for furniture and items in a good condition. People who are buying new electrical goods should consider using a Take Back Scheme where they are collected when your new appliance is delivered.
