Residents are being reminded of the many ways to pay Council bills ahead of the cashiers’ office at Mansfield’s Civic Centre closing permanently on Friday, 27th June.

You can set up a direct debit to pay Mansfield District Council bills by calling 01623 463 162, or pay by standing order, online via the council’s website, or via the 24-hour automated telephone payment line on 01623 428 632.

A member of staff will be based in the central reception area of the Civic Centre on Chesterfield Road South after the closure to help customers with queries including balance enquiries.

The number of phone lines has been doubled from two to four to address the expected increase in people using the automated 24-hour telephone payment line to make payments.

There are also 71 Post Office branches and PayPoint locations around the District where people can make payments for council services.

The closure of the cashiers’ office is one of many efficiencies identified through the council’s Change 2 service review programme and was part of the budget-setting process.

The Council plugged a £3.1m gap through efficiencies and income generation targets to deliver a balanced budget in 2014/15 but difficult decisions will continue to be made as the deficit is expected to increase to £4.731m by 2017/18.

Coun Roger Sutcliffe, Portfolio Holder for Resources at Mansfield District Council, said: “We have got to move into the 21st century and look at cost savings and this is one where the majority of customers don’t feel it would seriously affect them and we’ve managed to ensure there will be no compulsory redundancies as a result of the closure.”

The affected cashiers’ office staff will be re-deployed within the council as part of a restructure of customer services and both the deletion of vacant posts and restructure of customer services will save up to £106,000.
