A play area themed on history is to open in Rufford Abbey in early July.

The adventure playground, developed in partnership by Nottinghamshire County Council and Parkwood Outdoors, will explore the ages, from the Tudors through to Shakespeare.

There is an Edward VI-inspired oversized throne has been designed following research into the boy king. Similarly, a ship-based climbing frame has been designed following research into the age of pirates and seafaring which took place under the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.

A sensory experience has also been created within the ‘fantastical forest’, with surrounding shrubbery leading to an array of audio-visual features, including musical chimes and toadstool seating.

The free-to-use adventure playground also features tunnels and netting, inspired by the priest holes of King Henry VIII’s reign, which surround a large climbing rock that offers a stunning view of Rufford Abbey and the whole play area.

The park is wheelchair and pushchair friendly.

Justin Palfrey, assistant regional director at Parkwood Leisure, said: “Seeing this project come to life has been immensely rewarding and we hope that visitors will enjoy the revamped play area and finding out more about this country’s rich history.”

Coun John Cottee, chairman of the county council’s communities and places committee, said: “As part of the partnership working with Parkwood Outdoors, it is great to see these developments coming to fruition which will enhance the park further for all future visitors and will still be a free attraction at the park for all.”
