Assessment tonic for hospital

Posted onPosted on 27th Oct

Sherwood Forest Hospitals Trust, which runs King’s Mill Hospital, Sutton, is one of the best in the area when it comes to treating patients who are admitted to hospital through the Emergency Department quickly, no matter what day of the week it is, figures have shown in an assessment survey.

The seven-day service assessment, which was carried out at King’s Mill over a three-week period, showed that nine out of 10 emergency patients who were admitted to a ward after being seen in the Emergency Department were reviewed by a consultant within 14-hours, even over a weekend.

That put the trust as one of the best in the Midlands and East of England for reviewing patients within the time-frame, seven days a week.

When a patient comes into the Emergency Department at King’s Mill Hospital they are seen by a doctor and either discharged or admitted to a ward within the hospital.

If they are admitted, these results show that most patients are then reviewed by a consultant within 14-hours, meaning that a plan for further investigations or treatment can be put in place.

Sherwood Forest Hospitals’ Medical Director, Andy Haynes, said: “These statistics demonstrate the quality of care that medical staff are delivering to patients admitted through our Emergency Department, regardless of the day of the week that they are brought into the hospital – the same quality of service can be expected every day of the week.

“We have made some changes to our processes, which has been the key to our success, including standardising our weekend on-call procedures and the way that patients are escalated, and ensuring that there are always enough consultants on the ground every weekend.”
