REMINISCENCE packs called Memory Lane kits are being piloted by Nottinghamshire County Council to support people with dementia and their families.
The Libraries Service and Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Trust are working with the Forget-Me-Not dementia support group to pilot six kits on themes of the seaside, childhood, women’s world in the 1950s, men’s world in the 1940s, going out in the 1940s, and transport.
If the pilot is a success, 50 kits will be made available in the county’s 12 biggest libraries to co-incide with Dementia Awareness Week in May. The kits feature picture and scrapbooks, objects on a particular theme, DVDs and CDs, photographs and pictures.
The scheme is part of the council’s aim to have dementia-friendly libraries, supporting The Alzheimer’s Society’s five-year plan on a range of initiatives aimed at people with dementia and their carers.
Last May, the council and Sherwood Forest Hospitals teamed up to ensure libraries stocked Reading About Dementia, a collection of self-help books now available at libraries and hospitals in the area.
