Brownie leader is a national star

Posted onPosted on 24th Feb

A young woman from Blidworth has been given a national award in recognition of her commitment to local young people — and to Blidworth Brownies in particular.

Brownie leader Laila Elson, (20), was presented with the Guiding Star by Abi Salter, Chief Commissioner for Girlguiding Midlands, during 1st Blidworth Brownies’ weekly meeting in St Andrew’s Mission Hall.

After the surprise presentation it was business as usual for Laila, working with Brown Owl Kathy Straw to plan activities and outings for the 18 Brownies in their unit.

“Laila is an inspiration to us all,” said Kathy, who nominated Laila for the award.

“Her mum, Hebran, and I used to run Blidworth Brownies between us, but when she sadly died four years ago it looked like the future of the unit was in doubt as we had no other adult leaders.

“Although Laila was then only 15, she was determined to do all she could to keep us open.”
Laila completed her leadership qualification soon after her 18th birthday, making her the youngest qualified leader in Mansfield Division.

She went to Nottingham Trent University, enabling her to return to Blidworth on Tuesday evenings to help run the Brownie unit.

“Laila is a brave and inspirational role model for our girls,” said Mansfield Division Commissioner Sarah Clarkson, who supported the nomination.

“She has continued to develop the unit while providing support to her younger sister and her grandparents, balancing all of that with commitment to her studies.”

The Guiding Star is a special award for members of Girlguiding UK under 26 who have displayed exceptional courage or shown great initiative or responsibility.

Applications are submitted to the national Girlguiding Awards Committee without the knowledge of the nominee or their family, which meant that the presentation was a surprise to Laila.

Chief Commissioner Abi said: “I’m delighted to present this award in recognition of Laila’s tremendous enthusiasm and leadership.

“She is a shining example of how young people can make a difference in their community.”
