Kick-boxing Joshua will be Stags mascot

Asquith Primary School pupil Joshua Gascoyne, (9), received a surprise in an assembly at the Mansfield school when he was told he had won a full mascot day at Mansfield Town Football Club courtesy of recruitment specialists Teachers UK.

Joshua was awarded the prize, for the match against Leyton Orient, after headteacher Clare Harding nominated him in the Teachers UK competition, which recognises pupils who show exceptional commitment to school or after-school activities.

Joshua has represented England at kick-boxing in a championships in Malta, where he returned with a silver medal.

She said: “Joshua works well and engages with whatever is happening in his classroom. He upholds the values of the school and is a pleasure to have. Sport is definitely one of his passions.

“He also leads a busy life outside school and, with the support of his family, takes part in a variety of out-of-school activities.

“Education is not just about what happens in school; it goes far beyond the school gate and Joshua is someone who has really embraced this and his desire to achieve and be the best that he can be has been well rewarded.”

Louise Hamby, of Teachers UK, based at Mansfield’s I-Centre, said the company was keen to help schools reward dedicated pupils.

“We work with schools on a daily basis to meet their staffing needs and see so many children doing their very best and achieving wonderful things. So for us, it’s a pleasure to offer this reward for the children who stand out for either commitment at their school work or after school activities. It gives us a great deal of pleasure to see their smiling faces when they realise what the Mascot Day will hold for them and it is definitely the best part of my job!”

Gary Shaw, Mansfield Town community manager, said the prize was an exciting, fun-packed day that culminates in watching a match. “Joshua will meet all of the players and visit the changing rooms to receive a football signed by the team. It’s a real behind-the-scenes look at match day and Joshua will be able to lead Stags players on to the pitch before joining his family to watch Stags vs Leyton Orient.”

Joshua said: “I have seen the crowds there before so I might be a bit nervous leading the team on to the pitch.

“I think I was nominated because I am good at sports. I like swimming, football, basketball and I am a green and blue stripe in karate. I also represented England at kick-boxing and I got a silver medal – that’s all.”
