“Smarter way of working” at community hub

Posted onPosted on 16th Nov

Mansfield Civic Centre has become home to a new community safety hub.

It has brought together teams from Nottinghamshire Police and Mansfield District Council’s community safety department and provides a joint approach to dealing with crime, disorder and safety issues.

The move to a shared centre follows a national trend of public sector organisations working more collaboratively — and the closure of Mansfield Woodhouse Police Station.

Both organisations will share services and buildings to reduce costs.

Among the hub’s initial aims are to improve links with communities and to adopt a single process for all hub officers to deal with anti-social behaviour and low level crime.

To support the community safety team, Mansfield District Council has also replaced its old fibre-optic CCTV system with a new state-of-the-art wireless system.

Inspector Nick Butler, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “The hub is a fantastic opportunity for all partners to work closely together to resolve community issues and concerns.

“With the new way of working, members of the public will only need to tell one person about a problem once and we will do the rest. This eradicates the possibility of being passed between organisations and departments.

“We will have the same number of officers, it’s just a smarter way of working.

“Both ourselves and the council have the same aim of making Mansfield a safer and more enjoyable place to live and work. Being together in the hub and utilising the same problem-solving techniques and systems means we can do this quicker and better than before.”

Coun Mick Barton, council portfolio holder for public protection, said: “This is a positive step for community safety across Mansfield district that makes sense as it will improve communications and allow us to work more closely together.”
