An opportunity to discuss diabetes care and understand what the future holds for people living with or caring for people with the condition is being held next month.
Diabetes UK is hosting the event during Diabetes Week and key healthcare professionals will be offering an up-to-date picture on a programme designed to support people living with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.
The Diabetes Public Engagement Event is taking place on Thursday June 16th, from 6pm to 8pm, at Mansfield Town Football Club.
Mansfield and Ashfield Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) will be joining the charity to ensure all questions surrounding current health provision for people living with diabetes and plans for the future can be answered.
Latest footcare statistics for Mansfield and Ashfield CCG show that there were 4.3 amputations per thousand people living with diabetes per year between 2011 to 2014. This is above the national average of 2.6 per thousand people with diabetes.
Gerald Ellis, acting Diabetes lead at Mansfield and Ashfield CCG, said: “Diabetes care is a high priority for the CCG and we are committed to working closely with Diabetes UK and other organisations to ensure we keep improving the care we provide and also support initiatives to help prevent or delay people developing Type 2 diabetes.”
Peter Shorrick, Diabetes UK Midlands Regional Head, said: “I strongly urge anyone living with diabetes, whether it’s Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, to attend this meeting.
“Getting the right healthcare is vital to reducing some of the complications which can come from poorly managed-diabetes. Many of these are avoidable, in fact evidence shows that up to 80 per cent of diabetes-related amputations could be prevented.
“Knowing what to look for so you can act quickly if you suspect a problem with your feet and ensuring health care professionals are all up to speed and provide good quality footcare are key to reducing amputations.”
As well as an update on the integrated care teams, people will be able to meet other people living with the condition and members of the Diabetes UK Midlands team will be there too.
Refreshments are available at the event, which is free. To book a place call 01922 614500.
