Sutton man Ryan McCrum, who lost part of his left leg following a road accident, is preparing to jump out of a plane to raise money for a charity that has helped him recover.
And his mum, Sally, (45), will also make a parachute jump on the same day to help the Limbless Association.
Ryan was 19 when, in November 2013, he was riding his motorcycle through Sutton town centre and was involved in a collision.
His left leg was trapped against the car and after six weeks in both the Queen’s Medical Centre and Nottingham City Hospital, it had to be amputated below the knee.
Ryan has had 16 operations and hopes to eventually be able to use a prosthetic leg, although he will not be able to return to work as a warehouse operative.
Following his injuries, he discovered the work of the Limbless Association, an organisation dedicated to helping people who have lost limbs.
Ryan said: “It is hard to get used to. It shows how you take everything for granted but you have to crack on.
“You have to learn to walk again and there are things I can’t do, like be a warehouse worker. I came across the work of the association and thought that there was something I could do to help others.
“There isn’t a lot of charity support for young amputees out there and more should be done to help their recovery to give everyone a better lifestyle.”
On 12th June, Ryan and his mum (pictured above), who works as a receptionist at Fidler & Pepper Solicitors, in Mansfield and Ashfield, will jump from a plane at Langar Airfield.
Sally said: “It’s hard as a family and there is so much care that you have to provide, so if we can do our little bit then that is good.
“We have not done anything like this before, but we will be fine. If it raises money and awareness for the charity, then we will have succeeded.”
