Raising awareness of dementia

Posted onPosted on 11th May

Sherwood Forest Hospitals is supporting Dementia Awareness Week (15-21 May) by delivering a programme of events at King’s Mill Hospital aimed at increasing awareness and understanding of dementia among staff, patients and visitors.

There are over 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK. Dementia affects thinking, behaviour and the ability to perform everyday tasks. The early signs of dementia are very subtle and vague and may not be immediately obvious. Some common symptoms may include memory loss, confusion, personality change, withdrawal and a loss of ability to perform everyday tasks.

Activities, which include two advice and information sessions run by specialists, and a Dementia Community Roadshow run by the Alzheimer’s Society, will provide essential support, information and advice about dementia to members of the public.

Events will also see a special tea party being held for patients living with dementia and their carers on ward 51, a geriatric care ward, and Woodland ward, which is King’s Mill Hospital’s dedicated dementia care ward.

Dr Steve Rutter, Clinical Lead for Geriatrics, said: “Dementia is one of the greatest health concerns for people over 65.

“We hope the week will raise awareness of some facts about dementia, and allow people to gather further help and advice should they need it, either for themselves, or for someone they care about.”
