2,500 Scouts to descend on racecourse

Scouts will be racing to Southwell Racecourse in May for the Notts Scouts BIG Weekend, an adventure-filled camp based on an out-of-this-world theme.

More than 2,500 participants will take part in the Scouting spectacular over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend with well over half of the 125 Notts Scouts Groups signing up to take part.

Starting on the Friday evening, 22nd May, with a party-style opening ceremony, all 2,500 participants will celebrate together in an open-air arena. There will be more than 100 activities ranging from more traditional ones, including crate-stacking, giant pioneering and raft-building, to more modern ones, including geocaching and laser-tag.

There will also be bands, discos and an open-air cinema in the evening and new activities for the Scouts to tr, such water walking, Scout Radio and the Free Fall Stunt Bag.

Matt Rooney, head of Nottinghamshire Scouts, said: “We are so pleased to be able to provide such an amazing opportunity for our Scouts.

“Scouting is all about experiencing new and exciting activities, whilst making new friends and being outdoors. Following on from the huge success of our last BIG Weekend, we wanted to work in partnership with our youngsters to create something exciting for all! Scouting is a modern and exciting organisation and events like this show just how relevant we are to young people and adults alike.”

Mark Clayton, general manager of Southwell Racecourse, said: “We are delighted to be welcoming so many Scouts to Southwell Racecourse. It is a great honour for us to be associated with the Nottinghamshire Scouts and I know they will have a brilliant weekend here and make the most of all that the Southwell Racecourse has to offer.”
