Challenge adds up for academy youngsters

The Bramble Academy, Mansfield Woodhouse, has teamed up with local business mentors to run an innovative maths challenge across all year groups during the academic.

More than 200 children will work to understand maths in the context of an employer’s working environment and listen to stories about careers available in the workplace.

Business mentors from Pinders Opticians, the Coal Authority, Calverton Finance, Avonside Roofing, Laing O’Rourke and Pinewood Lettings are supporting the children to develop business plans, carry out market research and agree product and team roles.

The children will present their work at a Dragons Den-style event in July.

Mansfield 103.2 radio went to the school to interview pupils in class six, their teacher and Emily Revill, of Calverton Finance

Emily said “The children have produced excellent work and showcased their employability skills and understanding of maths by working out how much they need to borrow and what they would have to pay back.

“The business plan produced was of a high quality and I am confident that we can win this challenge.

Head of school Celia Oates said: “Working with employers on challenge will bring the subject alive for our children and they will see the relevance of their learning to the world of work.

“This is the beginning of an exciting journey in establishing a sustainable relationship with these wonderful employers.”
The academy is a member of The Evolve Trust.
